Morris Rubell
Holocaust Remembrance Journeys
Remembrance Journeys
Remembrance Journeys are immersive, one-day, supervised bus trips to Washington, D.C., designed to provide high school and middle school students with a profound educational experience. Participants visit the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, gaining a deeper understanding of history, remembrance, and social justice. Each trip is guided by educators from participating schools, Holocaust survivors, and a representative from the Foundation.
Each journey includes approximately 45 to 50 students, with all expenses fully covered by the Fund. Teachers, chaperones, and guest speakers generously volunteer their time to support this meaningful initiative.
During the trip, students are introduced to the story of Morris Rubell—who passed away in 1995—through a powerful video testimony. As a child survivor of the Krosno ghetto in Poland and multiple concentration camps, including Plaszow, Mauthausen, Melk, and Ebensee, Morris recounts his experiences, his family’s survival, and his eventual liberation. His story lays the foundation for the deeply personal learning experience that follows.
On the bus, students have the rare opportunity to engage with second-generation Holocaust survivors, hearing personal accounts that bring history to life. They are encouraged to ask questions, participate in discussions, and reflect on the lasting impact of these events.
The experience often culminates at the end of the academic year with the Youth Leadership Seminar, where more than 300 students, teachers, and survivors reunite. Through interactive discussions, guest speakers, and collaborative activities, participants reflect on the lessons of the Holocaust. The seminar reinforces the importance of embracing diversity, standing against hatred and intolerance, and fostering leadership that actively challenges bullying and discrimination.
